It was developed during the 1940s in close collaboration with a boat builder, who was able to advise Knoll and Saarinen on the use of fibreglass and resin. This production method was very much in its infancy at the time, and the Womb Chair became the first piece of mass produced furniture with an integrated seat shell made of fibre reinforced plastic.
Surrounding the shell is an expanse of foam, with two inset cushions for an added element of comfort. Supported by a bent tubular steel frame, the Womb Chair allows for a range of seating postures, creating a special sense of warmth and security that finds vivid expression in its name.
The Womb chair is available to order in a wide range of fabrics - for details of other options please email [email protected] or call our showroom on 020 7278 8456.
A Womb ottoman and settee are also available in the Knoll collection.
