Behind the curatorial process: part 2

Our physical space may be temporarily closed, but we are still very much open for business. As we transition into spring we’ve begun to cast our minds ahead to new additions for our showroom.

We wanted to share a little of the stories and inspiration behind our curatorial process and our favourite pieces of the moment. This is the second post in our series; you can see the first post here.

Room Set Two - Inspired by the work of artist Andreas Eriksson.

Our second room set is inspired by the work Andreas Eriksson, an artist whose work straddles between abstract and figurative. In this untitled work, layers of paint in varying hues and thicknesses form rich strata reminiscent of rock formations, topography and other forms found in nature. A series of greens contrast with not just with each other, but also intermingle with tints of inky black and chalk white. The artwork feels hectic yet harmonious, the variety of mark marking techniques used create texture and depth.

This duality of heavy/light, layering and balance, is echoed in the colours and forms of our second scene, where a deep-seated sofa balances atop a slim frame, perfectly mitred corners blend with dense hand-knotted weaves, and the monochrome palette is enlivened with dusky olive green.

We are always looking for sofas with a small footprint, and the Sepal by Luca Nichetto for Wendelbo fits this brief perfectly. It is a light casual sofa that can be used in a multitude of different spaces. The slimline frame counterbalances the dense comfortable seat whilst retaining an elegant silhouette. We’ve chosen to upholster the Sepal in Byram, a soft touch Mohair fabric by Kvadrat in a dense moss green.

The Sepal’s frame is echoed and complemented by the Tea Room lounge chair designed by Nick Ross for Menu. We first saw this piece last year at Copenhagen Design Week, used in the communal spaces of the Audo; a hybrid hotel and furniture showroom designed by Norm Architects and Menu. It references the curves of a traditional club chair and retains the same level of comfort, but with a compact frame and contemporary, slender backrest design. The Tea Room Lounge is upholstered in a pale green woven called Base by Sahco.

The Atlas cabinet by Pastoe is our storage choice for this scene, and as with all Pastoe pieces the craftsmanship on this cabinet is incredible. The mitred corners and lean frame create a clean, minimal silhouette.

The pure geometrical design of the Atlas cabinet plays counterfoil to the softness of the newly launched Kanon Rake Pattern Rug by Kvadrat. The rug’s fibres are both hand-woven and hand-knotted in India, graphic splashes of colour are glimpsed beneath the top layer.

The set is completed with the addition of Le Corbusier’s classic, the Lampe de Marseille by Nemo. This wall lamp has a distinct graphic shape, it’s two cone diffusers can be twisted around to adjust the level of light. The beauty of its design is perhaps best explained in the words of the man himself:

“Our eyes are made to see forms in light; light and shade reveal these forms; cubes, cones, spheres, cylinders or pyramids are the great primary forms which light reveals to advantage; the image of these is distinct and tangible within us without ambiguity. It is for this reason that these are beautiful forms, the most beautiful forms.”
