James Gorst Architects create a serene, tranquil residence in Suffolk, where minimalist design blends with the surrounding landscape
Nestled in Suffolk, Amento is a beautifully designed family home by James Gorst Architects. The design draws inspiration from geometric principles, with axial walls extending into the landscape, creating sections that frame unique views of the surrounding garden.
Inside, a neutral material palette allows the natural environment to take center stage. The design achieves a serene and warm living space, effortlessly blending minimalism with nature-inspired elements. The result is an inviting yet sophisticated atmosphere that connects the home to its surroundings.
James Gorst Architect's, Director David Roy, shares: "The material and colour palette of Amento is stripped down to allow the vibrancy of the external natural world to dominate. An umber polished concrete floor anchors walls of pale brick and lime mortar, set against the moiré patterning of Douglas Fir veneered panels. This calm Nordic palette is strategically disrupted by occasional brief outbursts of intense, disruptive colour through the careful selection of furniture, fabrics and artworks."
The materials—raw exposed brick, light wood, and polished concrete—contribute to a space that feels tactile and grounded, while maintaining an understated elegance. The visual harmony between the architecture and its natural environment ensures that the home feels like an extension of the landscape.
"Amento is in many ways an honest, humble build—very little of the interior architecture is concealed so the furnishings needed to find their proper place through scale and tone. James Gorst Architects alongside Viaduct have been instrumental in guiding us to choose pieces that create a warm welcoming home and which are both functional and beautiful without being starkly modern. We simply would not have been able to achieve what we consider to be an exceptional space and one that is an absolute pleasure to live in and true to its original intention without their help. Viaduct assisted James Gorst Architects with sourcing furniture and lighting for the project, including designs from e15, Vitra, Arflex and Nanimarquina.
