Google Campus Shoreditch, Jump Studios

Google's Shoreditch Campus is an ambitious project situated at the heart of London's tech community. The space incorporates over 200 desk spaces along with 2 presentations spaces, 17 meeting rooms and café and roof terrace.

The idea of fostering a dynamic environment capable of not just housing, but inspiring start ups and entrepreneurs was at the core of the brief given to Jump Studio. Google wanted an open, social space that would encourage collaboration and the cross pollination of ideas.

The Bonhill Street site is an unassuming seven storey building that has been completely reinvented by the design team. The original building was stripped right back to it's most basic form, leaving lighting and ventilation elements exposed for an industrial feel.

The designers then added units to divide the open space often featuring the use of  utilitarian materials such as plywood, linoleum and shipping containers. The interplay of textures adding to the raw dynamism of the space as well as providing a more intimate, social settings for small meetings and lunch areas.

The roof terrace has been opened for public access and clad with timber slats. It will be used for social gatherings and summer screenings. 

Brightly coloured shipping containers are used to divide the space and provide smaller more intimate areas such as the micro kitchen area and informal meeting spaces. The materials palette is designed for maximum impact set against the monochrome workspaces.

Custom carpentry by Key Joinery is combined with furniture supplied by Viaduct such as Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec's Steelwood Stools and the Modus PLC Lounge Chair. 

Large open plan desking encourages social interaction and the sharing of ideas as well as space.

The materials chosen for the furniture blends high tech, ergonomic task chairs with chairs using more traditional bentwood techniques, reinforcing the versatility of the space.

The shipping containers are equipped with hot desking, personal lockers, recycling stations, video conferencing / meeting booths and a micro kitchen.

The open access cafe area blends custom joinery with modern Scandinavian lighting and furniture to create a light, contemporary space that echoes the rawness of the other aspects of the building.

Soft banquette areas were also used to create 'upholstered nooks offering respite from the hustle and bustle of the working areas'
